How Trauma Affects the Body: Four Steps to Releasing Tension

We all have traumas that we hold in the body. I had a client with tension in his shoulder. Every time he talked about the relationship issues he was having, he would tense up. A memory had come to him. He remembered he was playing bouncy ball as a boy with his friend who would pick on him and bully him. It brought along tension in his shoulder. He began holding on to that fear and shame long ago. There were physical signs of release as we worked to release the tension in the shoulder, including his tone of voice. His body released so deeply, he was able to fall asleep while talking to me! It’s unbelievable how trauma affects the body! 

Think of a TRAUMA from your past.

It doesn’t have to be a devastating trauma. It could have been that you were sent to your room for making a mess. Maybe you went into protection mode when you were playing ball with the neighborhood bully.

Trauma Stored as Energy

The traumas are stored in the body as energy. As a body-mind therapist, I can FEEL them. There are different ways to feel them, but after 20 years of doing this, I can’t really explain how I feel it anymore! I use different techniques, and find where the body holds and blocks. I move the client’s body slowly through these “holding” patterns, until the tension releases.

You can know where your traumas are stored by ASKING your body, or FEELING your body. Feel into your body right now. Where do you feel tension in your body? Put it in the comments.

Blocking Energy

I have had numerous clients come to see me to work out the dis-ease holding in their body. I have worked with people with depression, anxiety, MS, cancer, fibromyalgia, and all kinds of other inflammation. The clients that consistently come and do the work until the tension is released and have learned a new pattern are in remission.

How Trauma Affects the Body: The Diseases in You

Are you dealing with some kind of disease in your body? The disease can actually TEACH you where you are storing tension and traumas that you can then let go of!

The energy can get UNBLOCKED through body-mind therapy or hypnosis.

This is how it’s done:

  • A TRAUMA HAPPENS – “you get bullied while throwing a ball”
  • YOU STORE THE TRAUMA – “in your shoulder, you close down your heart chakra”
  • YOU FORM A BELIEF – “people cannot be trusted”
  • You ACT OUT your belief in your every day life – “You get TENSION when talking to your SPOUSE. Your heart chakra closes and your shoulders tighten.”

TO UNDO we either MOVE your body slowly through the tension until it releases.

OR Go back to the original trauma and remove the blocked energy and belief system tension in your mind.

The MIND and BODY are intricately connected. You HELD the belief in your body. That’s the stored energy. Once the belief is dealt with, the body releases as well.

So many clients have experienced a LIGHTNESS or a RELEASE after leaving a coaching session or a hypnosis session because it’s your BELIEFS that have you tense and feeling so HEAVY.

Your beliefs cause your body to REACT.

For instance, if you are afraid of public speaking, what happens? Your body reacts. You sweat, your stomach wants to empty, and your mouth goes dry. WHY? Because it is reacting to a FEAR response.

ALERT MODE is where MOST people with BODY PAIN spend most of their day. The people with the most tension in their bodies had the roughest childhoods in my experience. Your body stores the not only just the beliefs, but also the physical trauma, such as beatings, sexual assault, positions you were physically held in, old wounds etc. Your body stores the information in these places where the physical abuse happened.

When the energy becomes unblocked, there is freedom to start moving in a new way.

A new habit is formed, and the old habit gets released through

  1. Knowing it’s there – awareness
  2. Releasing the stored energy or belief
  3. Inhibiting it from happening – choosing not to allow the body into the old habit
  4. Choosing the new habit of freedom and relief.

Who wants homework that you can work on to tangibly make this happen in your life?


Do this exercise called progressive relaxation:

  • Get into a comfortable position
  • Attempt to allow your body to relax all the way
  • Once you feel you are relaxed all the way, put your attention on your tension
  • See if you can just relax whatever you are holding
  • Then, take a deep breath, and tense your body up ALL the way, as tight as it goes, your toes, legs, butt, stomach, hands, arms, chest, neck, face, mouth and eyes
  • Then, let it go with an EXHALE. Feel your body relax completely.

You can do this exercise with each and every body part, one by one. You can clench your jaw, and relax your jaw. You can clench your fists and relax your fists. Let this be your homework so you can begin to experience what TENSION feels like, and relaxation.
